Open to Humanities majors or minors who are seeking support for an unpaid experiential learning opportunity that is not a traditional internship or study abroad. See the application for more information.

International Study Abroad

Your major department may offer separate Study Abroad scholarships. Additionally, the Kennedy Center website offers other options for funding your program.

COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES STUDY ABROAD FUNDING
Open to Humanities majors or minors who are participating in a Humanities-sponsored Study Abroad program.

  • BYU Humanities scholarships are available to students who are a declared major in the College of Humanities (some scholarships are for minors too). Check descriptions for details.
    Please note:
    • Students must reapply each year to be considered for BYU Humanities scholarships. This application is separate from the general BYU scholarship application.
    • Students are not considered for scholarships unless their application is complete, including submission of required documents.
    • Most programs do not offer scholarships for spring or summer terms unless those terms are required for graduation.
    • Awards are often decided based on financial need—e.g., consideration of other awards, FAFSA scores (https://enrollment.byu.edu/federalaid/the-fafsa), etc.
    • International students can contact the BYU Financial Aid office to have a FAFSA/EFC score manually generated.

    Important Dates

    • General Humanities Scholarship applications open January 1st at 12:00 a.m. MT.
    • General Humanities Scholarship applications close on March 31st at 11:59 p.m. MT.
    • Teacher Education scholarship dates may vary (see below for information).
    • Departmental Scholarship dates may vary.

  • Peery Education Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate majors with preference given to students with a financial need.
    Ruth Beecroft Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate majors who maintain a 3.5 GPA with preference given to students with a financial need

    Madison Knight Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate majors with preference given to students with a financial need.
    Humanities+ Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate majors with senior class status (90 credit hours or more), a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and who have completed a Humanities+ experience (e.g. internship, mentored research, study abroad, volunteer, employment, etc.) prior to receiving the award.
    Fritz Burns Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate majors with preference given to California students, Junior or Senior status students, and students with financial need.
    Julie M. Malouf Scholarship
    Open to undergraduate students with a declared major in Art History, Classical Studies (Latin emphasis), German, or Spanish who maintain a 3.0 GPA with preference given to students with a financial need.
    Megan Welton Scholarship
    Open to undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree within the College of Humanities who have a GPA of 2.5 to 3.5 with preference given to students with a financial need.
    Teacher Education Scholarship
    Open to all Humanities undergraduate students pursuing a career in teaching the Humanities with preference given to students with a financial need. Students must be enrolled in their appropriate 476 course and be completing their student teaching for the semester awarded. Students doing a teaching internship do not qualify.

    ARABIC FLAGSHIP: OVERSEAS CAPSTONE YEAR IN MOROCCO
    Open to Humanities major and minor students participating in the Arabic Flagship program.
    CHINESE FLAGSHIP: OVERSEAS CAPSTONE YEAR IN CHINA
    Open to Humanities major and minor students participating in the Chinese Flagship program.
    BOREN
    Open to students planning an overseas program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren Fellowships are for international study.
    NATIONAL CHINESE BUSINESS CASE
    Competition held by the Marriott School.

    Comparative Arts and Letters

    JULIE M. MALOUF SCHOLARSHIP
    Open to undergraduate students Scholarship for Art History, Classical Studies-Latin emphasis, German, or Spanish majors with a 3.0 GPA (cumulative). Preference is given to students with financial need.

    FOREIGN LANGUAGE AREA STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP
    A U.S. Department of Education scholarship to encourage the study of specific underrepresented languages. Scholarship provides full-tuition + $5,000 stipend for undergraduate students and full tuition + $15,000 stipend for graduate students. Students must plan to use the language in their future career.
    BONNE SEMENCE SCHOLARSHIP
    A needs-based scholarship for students participating in the French Study Abroad.
    EMILY JANE ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP
    A needs-based scholarship for students studying French (preference given to those with a connection to West Africa) and for students living in the French language house.

    German and Russian

    JULIE M. MALOUF SCHOLARSHIP
    Open to undergraduate students Scholarship for Art History, Classical Studies-Latin emphasis, German, or Spanish majors with a 3.0 GPA (cumulative). Preference is given to students with financial need.
    HOUSING SUPPORT

    Linguistics

    Dee Gardner Scholarship
    Open to graduate and undergraduate students in Linguistics majors (Linguistics, English Language, Editing & Publishing, and TESOL) who have already completed at least three classes in their major. Preference will be given to nontraditional students, including older students, single parents, and parents with special family circumstances.

    Philosophy

    EXCELLENCE IN PHILOSOPHY SCHOLARSHIP
    Open to full-time students with a Philosophy major. Awards are primarily on the basis of academic excellence (particularly philosophical) and promise, and also financial need.
    YARN CONTEST

    Spanish & Portuguese

    JULIE M. MALOUF SCHOLARSHIP

    ENTREMUNDOS JOURNAL
    Open to any BYU student to submit their work that relates to the Luso and Hispanic Languages and Cultures.

    Loans
    There are many loan products available to assist you in financing your education. Financial aid counselors can help you understand what is available and can point out the logistics of each loan. More Information for student loans can be found at BYU Financial Aid.
  • These are awarded by the university to undergraduate students. Apply online for BYU student scholarships at the BYU Scholarships Office.
  • Scholarship Universe is a third-party software system that is licensed by BYU. This free service specifically tailors scholarship opportunities to you based on information you include in your profile. Results in the database are vetted and approved by Scholarship Universe. In order to enter Scholarship Universe and create a profile, you will need to log in with your BYU Net ID and password.
